My name is Mahria.  I’m currently within a term–or perhaps two–of graduating from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies/New Media Communications.  What is New Media Communications you ask?  Well, I’m still trying to understand it myself and that is part of what this blog is for.  I’m majoring in this “New” field but I can’t honestly say I’m really a NMC phenom of any sort.  We’ll see if this adventure renders a transformation…

I grew up in a quaint little villa known as Sweet Home, Oregon.  Or to anyone who has ever heard of it, the punch-line to every incest joke ever invented…  I ventured a far 60 minutes away from my home to the hard-hitting thug-life of Corvallis, Oregon, where dreams are big but the harsh ways of the world are even bigger.  A place where lattes and wheat-grass shots flow thicker than the salmon of Capistrano…  It sounds delicious, does it not?  Well, it’s not.  Not at all.  Theres literally nothing delicious about a wheat-grass, latte and salmon elixir.

Anyhow…  This class, writing for the media professional, is pretty much self-explanatory, it is just that, writing for the media professional but it does have a little spice to it as it is driven towards the learning all the dynamics and tools of being a writer engulfed by all the new media forms of communication.  Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, podcasts, etc., this is all crucial to be understood by anyone who wants to be a writer in todays world.  There are too many avenues for communication to travel through and if you’re not using them you’re neglecting much of an audience that will now get the information from another individual who understands this concept.  There is more to writing now than just an authentic story.  It is knowing how to deliver that message using the tools and many streams of information flow.  Good writing is all of this in one great big beautiful, and hopefully not too messy, package.  And that is what this class is about and what I hope to get out of it.
